Surfrider Foundation “Rise Above Plastics”

Plastic bags have corrupted our world and intoxicated our environment. My campaign illustrates the damage of plastic when it pollutes our environment and taints our natural resources with harmful chemicals and toxic substances. These toxins seep into the soil, and into our food and water, killing millions of animals each year and contaminating their ecosystems. This campaign asks the public to reduce the use of plastic bags and help bring themout of our environment.

The first step in this assignment was to simplify an illustration of a plastic bag and transform it with an object or other element that sends the clear message through a simplified icon. I used my plastic bag illustration and turned it into a tree in order to emphasize the idea of suffocation in our world’s ecosystems. Color explorations tested the effect of the campaign, and found that neutral, natural tones fit best with less color in order to translate as both nature and garbage. After the logo was complete, I implemented it in a series of campaign elements, such as buttons, posters, and billboard ads to spread awareness and educate the public. Branded tote bags and water tins contribute to the solution of the overall problem.

My design was featured by the San Diego Surf Rider Foundation, in hopes of helping to promote the campaign message: ‘Rise Above Plastics.’
