Sugar Rush Racers

Inspired by Disney’s feature film, Wreck it Ralph, Sugar Rush Racers is a character design illustration personal project. After I had seen the movie, I was inspired to create my own characters based off of the film’s makeshift video game, Sugar Rush. For this project I volunteered to draw customized Sugar Rush Racers for the participants of Disneyland College Program Spring Advantage 2013. What started as two sketches in our Facebook group multiplied throughout the application season. In the end, 80 Disneyland College Program cast members were transformed into their own signature Sugar Rush Racers.

Each custom character is illustrated based on each individual’s favorite dessert combined with his or her likeness and personality. Because all of these people were acquaintances on Facebook, progressively getting to know the 80 individual personalities was a challenge. Sometimes I would start chats with a few people individually, and browse through their profile pictures in order to capture their personality.

After gathering all of the information I needed, I started out with a sketch. Every day I would post sketches of their characters in pairs of two on our Facebook group. As the numbers increased, the project became more and more popular. I decided to secretly start coloring and painting the characters on pieces of 5×7 canvas board or illustration board to hand out at our first gathering of the program. The final stage of the project was a success, and created plenty of enthusiasm. I even made several lifetime friends from working on the project.
